Melissa Watterson

Husband: Dustin
Kids: Avery (11), Mason (9), Lincoln (7), Madelyn (5), Maxxum (3)

1.) I grew up in Akron and moved to Oakfield where my husband grew up.
2.) Bachelor Degree from Canisius College
3.) As a family we have so enjoyed the yearly Labor Day celebration our small town offered.  Living so closely to the event we witnessed first hand the hours upon hours volunteers selflessly gave to make it the homegrown tradition it once was.  My husband and I promised each other once we were at the point where our kids were a little older we would contribute to something we had been enjoying for the past several years!
4.) Bettering Oakfield is so important to my husband and I!  We have high hopes our five children will stay local and raise families here! We would love for them to enjoy this beautiful little town as much as we do!
5.) A few of my favorite things about Oakfield are:

  • The Elementary school –   It has been a fantastic experience for my three oldest boys thus far and my daughter is so eager to attend kindergarten next year!  I cannot speak highly enough of the staff at the Elementary building, we would never move out of the district!
  • The Oakfield Alabama Little League  – My husband is actively involved, as four of our children currently play.  We love baseball and our little, so naturally this is one of our favorites!
  • Haxton Memorial Library – My kids absolutely love our library!  The librarians (past and present) have been amazing!  The kids space located downstairs is perfect and away from the adult section so they can enjoy the space without fear of disrupting others.

Ritchie Kirkum

Age: 38
Family: Wife Jennifer, 11 year old daughter Ryleigh, 9 year old son Colin.

Life: I graduated from OACS in 1998. I left for college in Pennsylvania and came back to Genesee Community College. While in my early 20’s I lived in East Pembroke but it never felt like home.  Jennifer and I were married in 2006 and later that fall discovered we had a baby on the way.  We were fortunate enough to be able to remodel a home that has been in our family for years which was my Great-Grandmothers house in Oakfield… and the same home I lived in growing up.  We settled there after the remodel and grew our family when we had our son Colin.

Career: I have been in the Sales & Marketing Department of Darien Lake for 10 years.  I am currently the Corporate Event Sales Rep for Rochester, Syracuse and local counties. When I’m not working, I’m working out, watching movies and of course driving my daughter to dance, cheer-leading & softball and traveling like crazy with my son’s travel hockey team.

What prompted me to join the Oakfield Betterment Committee?
I love Oakfield. I have such amazing memories of Labor Daze as a kid. Circling Triangle Park over and over again. Dancing in the streets, meeting up with friends. It never felt the same after it left Triangle Park.  A few months before Labor Day 2017, Jamie Lindsley approached me about joining and mentioned the want, and more importantly the need to move it back to Triangle Park. Our committee worked hard to put together a one day event in 2017 with the goal of returning to Triangle Park in 2018 with a 3 day event.  I want my children to grow up with the same experiences in Oakfield that I did, which includes Labor Daze, but also new things like Christmas in Oakfield, Halloween & Thanksgiving activities.  As a committee, we want to build the Oakfield Betterment Committee back up to a point that we can contribute something to Oakfield, and make the originators of OBC proud.

My Favorite Thing About Oakfield?
It’s home. I know a lot of people have a disdain for their hometown, and not leaving.  Not me. I love it here and I love raising my family in this small town.

Timothy L. Nickels

Age: 38
Wife: Bonnie
Kids: Sadie, Carter

1.) I moved here in 2012. My wife, Bonnie, got her PLD from UB. We moved here from Livonia and loved it!
2.) I have work experience as a mason and contractor.
3.) I was blackmailed by Jamie to join the committee!
4.) My favorite thing is the people and the small town attitude.

Joel D’Alba

Age: 49
Wife: Carol
Kids: Jordan, Riley

1.) I am a life long resident: there is no place I’d rather live or raise a family. I just wish it was warmer year around.
2.) I am a graduate of OACS with a regents diploma. I graduated GCC with an Associates degree in science.
3.) My mother was one of the original founding members of OBC. She was very passionate about making Oakfield a better place to live.
4.) I would like to see younger generations stay in the area and take pride in the community. I would hope that they too would raise families here. It makes me sad to see that some of the big businesses that were around when I was a kid have closed their doors.
5.) My favorite thing about Oakfield is its small town feel and atmosphere. I feel for the most part people in this community look out for one another. The generality and community support in time of need are second to none. Oakfield’s best kept secret is the community and Oakfield Labor Daze.

Carrie Desjardins (Gilbert)

Spouse: Frankie Desjardins Jr.
Furbabie: Simon Emeril

I grew up in Basom. My Dad was Kevin Gilbert who worked for the Town of Alabama. My mom is Bonnie Gilbert she worked for the county. I have 2 younger sisters Kristina and Candy, and 1 younger brother. We all went to Oakfield school. I graduated in 1995. I took part in high school sports from track and field, cheerleading, colorquard, along with years of doing band and chorus also. I enjoyed being with my friends growing up and spending time going to school events.

My husband and I bought our house just over 4 years ago in Oakfield because we liked the way the school system is. We hoped to have children at some point when it’s in God’s plan for us. We have only been married for 7 years even though we knew each other from high School.

I joined Oakfield Betterment Committee because I want to do something that was something besides work and family. This was me stepping outside my comfort zone and be able to give back to the community I live in at the same time. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the people on the committee and hope we are able to make this community very proud of what we do.

Bri Guzdek

I am currently the treasurer of the Oakfield Betterment committee. I have two children who have both attended and are attending Oakfield School, Jaclyn and Chase Guzdek. I currently work at Advanced Thermal Systems, Inc. in Lancaster, NY as a Senior Designer and also at Orleans Community Health as a Phlebotomist. I grew up in Barre Center and went to Albion High School where I graduated in 1988. I attended Alfred State College and graduated in 1990 with an AAS degree in Drafting and Design. I enjoy living in Oakfield for the small town feel and country roads. I joined the committee to become more involved in the community and to get to know new people. My favorite thing about Oakfield is being able to walk around and see neighbors and eat at the various restaurants we have.

Carrie Wadams Monachino

Age:                46
Family:          Daughter Maggie Grace, 12

Oakfield Connection:        We moved to Oakfield when I was 10, I stayed in Oakfield through my first 2 years of college at GCC then moved back and bought a house down the street from my parents and where I grew up

Career/Education Experience:    Graduate of GCC and Brockport State College, I am the Office Coordinator and a Licensed Crop Insurance Agent for Helena Agri Enterprises LLC in Medina, NY

What prompted me to join:        I wanted to be a part of something that as a child I truly enjoyed, my mom was always a part of helping with Labor Daze in Mothers Club when I was younger and I wanted to give back to my community and help out as she did.

It is important to me to continue the Labor Daze tradition where small town values are important, where everyone knows everyone, it’s a very family oriented town.

My favorite thing about Oakfield is the people in it and how the community comes together and the generations of families that still reside here.

Kristen Porter

Husband: Thomas
Kids: Zachery, Kyle, and Teigen.

I have lived in Oakfield my whole life.  I graduated from Oakfield-Alabama Central School in 2001. I went on to GCC and received an Associates in Paralegal Studies. I worked for a couple of lawyers, and realized it wasn’t my passion. I started working at the Department of Veteran Affairs in 2008. I’ve worked for Veterans for 10 years! I love my job and I’m firm believer that “when you love what you do, you never work a day in your life”.

My Favorite things about Oakfield:

I love that it’s small. That saying “It takes a village to raise children”. It’s true! I don’t think we could have picked a better place to raise our kids. We have a great school system & I’m enjoying watching my kids grow up here.

Why did I join the Betterment Committee?

I joined the Betterment Committee because I’m always telling my kids they need to volunteer. I’m told that your children will not pay as much attention to your words, as they will your example. So, here I am! I always loved Labor Daze growing up, and want my kids to have the same experience that I did.  Joining the OBC has been a great experience and I’m so glad I did.
